Google Earth Errata and Suggestions

corrections and suggestions for the next update of the CoML Google Earth layer.

For Corrections
  1. Give the title of the placmark in the pop-up window.
  2. or Describe the location of the placemark  (Google Earth should give the lat/long near the bottom of the window if you click on the icon)
  3. note text and credit errors.
  4. if the placemark in is the wrong location, let us know the lat/long

For your convenience, structured KML (the original version E&O Team and Map&Viz Team built) can be downloaded so it is a little bit easier to browse CoML placemarks. Click the link below.

Original structured CoML layers for GE5

Note that the folder structure is gone in the official Google Earth 5. Thus at thie moment, we don't accept suggestion about folder structures (e.g. this placemark should be in this folder; please add another folder...)

MAR-ECO

D.C. pass this along:

However, I checked the items already uploaded by CoML referring to MAR-ECO. Unfortunately I discovered some errors and would ask you please to make a few amendments:

1) Migration pathways. This item is placed way off the mid-Atlantic Ridge in an area we never visited. It is OK to include this item, but it should then be placed on the Ridge proper (i.e. further West where the ride is apparent from the relief).
2) New Continent expedition. The expedition was not funded by MAR-ECO, but by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It would be quite embarrassing to let this error stay, in particular to Professor Priede. The name of the expedition is also very strange. I know it was used in press releases, but I’d much rather see another title, e.g. ‘2007 Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone Expedition’.
3) Daily vertical migrations. This is also fine to include (although vertical migration is hardly a new discovery), but the year should be 2004, not 2005.

lat: 19.290599 lon: -81.200555

The placemarks "Hidden Octopus" and "Counting all the Creatures in the Gulf" should be moved into the ocean.

CMarZ popups misclassified

our notes meeting with DA suggest that she found a pop-up that was in the Explore the Oceans layer that was about CMarZ. Was this populated from thedeepness CMS?

GE5 bug affects geographic focuses for CMarZ and ICOMM

Posted by efujioka at Feb 10, 2009 10:42 AM
I've found a bug in Google Earth 5 where a KMZ loaded from a link in a popup strangely alters <href> so the images of ground overlays are not fetched.

This bug affects geographic focuses for CMarZ and ICOMM as their focuses are rendered as images instead of points (e.g. sampling stations).

I haven't tested all the projects. If you've found a similar weirdness, please post here.

I reported this bug to Google and It seems Google recognizes it. So hopefully the bug will be fixed in the next minor version upgrade.

Wrong species name for Life in the Coldest, Saltiest Seawater

Posted by efujioka at Feb 10, 2009 10:53 AM
Someone from NaGISA pointed out that the species name in the popup "Life in the Coldest, Saltiest Seawater" is wrong.
The popup says "Arctic ctenophore" but she said it's not Arctic.
I don't think she told me the correct name, so we need to find out.
I don't remember her name, so maybe we can ask Ann Knowlton...
