The Census of Marine Life was a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations engaged in a 10-year scientific initiative to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans.  The world's first comprehensive census of the past, present, and future of life in the oceans was released in October 2010.

 

6.3 Developed Acoustic Technology

Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing imaging is effectively instan- taneous because the entire region can be surveyed in less time than it takes a marine organism to traverse a single OAWRS resolution cell. An instantaneous OAWRS image shows fish shoals near the continental shelf edge 100 kilometer off of Long Island, New York on May 15, 2003. Overlaying the image to scale on New York City harbor shows the massive size of the fish shoal, and the massive area that can be remotely sensed.
