Adding Information to comlmaps.org

How to add pages to the site, and upload other types of data.

When you log in to the site, certain parts of the site will have a light green frame around page content. This indicates that your account has permission to edit that part of the site- you can add new pages, upload files or make changes to existing content.

Pages and Files

There are three main types of data. Pages, Files and Folders

  • Pages are new webpages- when you add a page to the site, you get a editing tool bar with basic word processor funtions to edit the body of the page.
  • Files are external files, like PDFs or MS Word documents that you upload to the site. You can't edit them on the site, but you can make them available for sharing. If you want to upload a JPG or GIF and have it display, make sure you use the Image type
  • Folders are just like folders on a desktop computer. Notice that they appear in site URLs divided as a slash. The page you are reading right now is in a subfolder of the "comlmaps.org/how-to" folder.

Editing webpages

If you have permission to edit an existing page, your green editing frame will include a "Edit" tab, which brings up the frame with the basic editing tools. If you are going to make a lot of edits to a page, the zoom button at the right-end of the bar will make the page fill the screen. This can make editing easier.

Make sure to un-zoom and click the Save button when you are done.

You should be able to copy text from other documents and past it into the Body Text frame with much of the formatting intact.

Adding external files and images

When you choose File or Image from the Add new... menu, you get a form with a button that allows you to browse to a file on your computer.

Images can also be uploaded when you are editing a page.Uploading Images

  • Click your insertion cursor where you want the image to sit in the page.
  • The image will be upload to the folder you are working in.
  • Give the image a title. Choose a size from the menu in the Insert Image screen, then click okay.
  • Clicking on the image when it is embedding in the page gives it a frame which allows you to resize it.
  • When an image has it's frame around it, you can also delete it by using your delete or backspace key.

Folders

Folder contain other files. If your account can make changes to a folder, you will get the green editing frame.

  • To reorder  objects in a folder, click on the Contents tab. You will see a grid that give the Title, Size and Modify date of the contents. The last column is labled Order. Clicking on the :: highlights a row and allows you to drag the item up or down in the list.

  •  You can also make a page the default item in a folder, so you don't just get a list of contents when you navigate to a folder. This is the equivalent of making a page an "index.html".
  • As you are looking at the folder listing, click on the Display menu, then "Select a content item for as default view"

  • You will then get a list of items in the folder where you can designate a page as the default.
